Our Private Road Circuit for Driving Lessons
Our off road private circuit is the Eelmoor Driver Training Facility just outside Farnborough (for maps click Location). This is a Ministry of Defence driver training facility, but we have secured a licence giving us exclusive use of the track on certain days of the year (see Dates). What facilities does the off road driver training circuit offer?Firstly it is important to point out that being an MoD facility rather than a public track there are no toilets or catering facilities - please bear this in mind when planning your day! There is a large Tesco store a few miles away with cafe and toilet facilities (see Location). But the positives far outweigh the negatives as the driving track is superb for driving lessons! It's called "off road" because it is not on the public road, but it's not an off-road dirt track! The track we use for Under 17s driving lessons has an excellent tarmac surface and offers a 1.5km continuous circuit (approx 1 mile). It has two very long straights allowing us to practice gear changing all the way up to 5th gear and to practice overtaking in complete safety. The entire circuit is marked out as two lanes all the way round, allowing us the flexibility to simulate dual carriageway scenarios or to simulate meeting or crossing opposing traffic on a single carriageway road. It also has a variety of bends and junctions, allowing us to teach novice drivers how to approach and deal with a variety of hazards. (See Topics for a full explanation of which elements of the Learning to Drive syllabus we can cover off road on our under 17 driving lessons). Advantages of learning to drive on our off-road circuit
Additionally, since it is a private road system, we are able to stop the car at any point and get out to look at features of the road to assist or reinforce learning. For instance to reinforce learning about stopping distances we can put markers down and get out of the car and walk back to really understand just how far the car travelled before stopping, and how this is affected by different speeds. Or we can ask a pupil to assess on foot where they think they will need to brake for a particular corner at a particular speed, put a marker down, then get in the car and see how good their assessment was in reality. These sorts of facilities allow our students to gain real understanding of the concepts, rather than just learning stopping distances by heart for example from the Highway Code. There is a car park and parents are welcome to wait and watch their sons or daughters during their under 17 driving lessons. There are very few places around the UK where you can learn to drive under 17 on an off road private road circuit, and even fewer where you can have 1-to-1 driving lessons aged 15 or 16 following a structured programme. So if you are serious about getting a head start on learning to drive then book your lessons today - availability is strictly limited. |
